Death Road

The Death Road in Bolivia got its name in 1995; ever since, it is estimated that the road claims around 200 lives of travelers every year. All along the road, there are crosses marking the spots of fallen vehicles; even though there is a paved road from La Paz to Coroice, the old Camino de la Muerte is still a number one attraction for most motorcyclists.

The road is mostly rock, stone, and gravel, and it's easier going up than down. The curves are sometimes incredibly steep, so people honk their horns to warn each other; and at times, the road gets so narrow it's impossible to pass an oncoming car or bike. There are no guard rails or fences, and if you don't make the turn, then that's pretty much it - sheer drop is at times 500 - 600 meters. As the road descends into the jungle, the road gets wet and muddy and waterfalls fall on your head - the road is never much wider than about 3 meters so there's usually no choice but to drive straight through.

The ascending driver has the right of way, so if you are going down you must move to the outer edge to let the oncoming vehicle pass. That's one of the reasons I did the Death road from Coroico to La Paz and not the other way round🙂

Is the road really deadly? Yes, if you ride like a maniac; beware of mountain bikers and mental local drivers, but otherwise it's definitely doable. Thrills and spectacular views guaranteed!

Bolivijos Mirties Kelias savo pavadinimą užsitarnavo dar 1995 metais; anot statistikos, kelias kasmet pareikalauja apie 200 keliautojų gyvybių. Visas kelias nusėtas kryžiais, žyminčiais vietas, kur žuvo juo keliavę žmonės, kas sukuria makabrišką atmosferą; iš La Paz į Coroico šiandien veda naujas asfaltuotas kelias, tačiau Camino de la Muerte toli gražu nepraranda savo populiarumo tarp motociklininkų.

Mirties Kelias be galo siauras - apie 3 metrus, todėl prasilenkti daug kur neįmanoma. Pirmumo teisę turi važiuojantys į viršų - besileidžiantys žemyn privalo pasitraukti į kraštą.

Kelias visur daugiausia akmenuotas, džiunglėse per lietų - purvinas ir slidus. Tiesiai ant galvos krenta kriokliai, nėra jokių apsauginių tvorelių ar turėklų - jei nesuvaldysi motociklo posūkyje, tai bus paskutinis posūkis, nes uolų aukštis siekia 600 metrų.

Ar Camino de la Muerte tikrai mirtinas? Važiuojant atsargiai ir pasisaugant lakstančių dviratininkų - veikiausiai ne. Vis dėlto, vieno pavojingiausių pasaulio kelių vardą jis užsitarnavo ne be reikalo...
