Canyon del Pato, Peru

Peru is an absolutely stunning country for riding either on or off road, and it's full of places worth seeing regardless of what sort of riding you prefer. Canyon del Pato is one of them: located in the Ancash region, North - Central Peru, it's a road that snakes along the river Santa and runs through 54 crude tunnels cut into the rock. Rio Santa is where the two mountain ranges - Cordillera Negra and Cordillera Blanca meet, creating a deep gorge (over 1000 meters at the deepest point), sometimes as narrow as 15 meters. The road is literally hacked in sheer precipitous rock, sometimes ascending to vertigo - inducing heights; all 54 tunnels are unlit and there are no traffic lights anywhere so be careful before going into them if you cannot see the other side. The road is mostly gravel and hard - packed dirt. There is practically no traffic, but be aware of the local drivers who are notoriously bad at corners and speed limits. And stopping. And everything else.

There are only a few tiny villages along the way - good for cold drinks and very basic food, not so much for fuel. The area is mostly desert, so stay hydrated; it's easily done in one day and the distance isn't too great so a 200km fuel range is more than enough.

I'll definitely be riding Canyon del Pato again before it becomes a massive tourist attraction - right now, the locals are still happy to see you, the road is still nearly completely empty, and the nature is still pristine.Hurry up before it's all paved and civilized!🙂

Peru - ideali šalis tiek on, tiek off road motokeliautojams, nes gamtos ir žmonių įvairovė čia tokia didžiulė, jog rasti galima visko. Bet kartu Peru yra kelių, kuriais pravažiuoti tiesiog būtina, nesvarbu, su harliu ar su DRZ, ir Ancash regione šiaurėje dūksantis Canyon del Pato yra vienas jų. 'Ančiuko kanjono' kelias bėga palei upę Santa, ties kuria susiduria du kalnynai - Cordillera Blanca ir Cordillera Negra, sukurdami nežemišką uolų kanjoną. Kanjono keliasiškirstas uoloje, kurios aukštis kartais siekia virš kilometro, ir bėga per 54 neapšviestus tunelius, atmestinai ištašytus akmenyje. Nei viename tunelyje nėra šviesoforų ar kitokių eismą reguliuojančių ženklų, todėl reikia važiuoti atsargiau ir pasitikėti intuicija bei sėkme - teoriškai privažiavus tunelį reikėtų sustoti ir papypsėti, taip perspėjant važiuojančius priešpriešiais; tačiau realybėje į signalus nieks nekreipia dėmesio ir tiesiog važiuoja kiaurai.

Pakeliui greičiausiai nesutiksi nei gyvos dvasios, išskyrus keletą vietinių maniakų sunkvežimių vairuotojų; tarp Caraz ir Chimbote yra keli mažučiai kaimeliai, kuriuose galima rasti šaltų gėrimų ir šiokio tokio maisto, bet degalinę - be šansų. Didžioji Ancash regiono dalis - dykuma, todėl būtina su savim turėti vandens. Pats kelias didžiąja dalimi - žvyras.

Žinau, kad būtinai darkart grįšiu Canyon del Pato keliu, kol jo dar nespėjo išasfaltuoti ir pakeliui primėtyti viešbučių ir restoranų🙂 Gamta ir žmonės ten vis dar nepasikeitę, o pilkų kanjono uolynų atmosfera nori nenori primena Vienuolio 'Amžinąjį smuikininką'. Važiuojant vienam, be kompanijos, per nugarą tikrai nubėga šiurpuliukai!
